Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period. The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN. The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund. Approved in 2018 by the UNPDF, USD $499,999 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to strengthen national geospatial information management (GI) capacities by approving the United Nations Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (IGIF) that later launched in 2020. The project focused on developing the IGIF Implementation Guide as a reference for establishing and strengthening national geospatial systems, supporting SDG monitoring and policy-making. Other key activities included four expert consultations to finalize the Implementation Guide ; three regional workshops on operationalizing IGIF (Chile, Ethiopia, Belarus) ; and targeted technical assistance in Malaysia, Chile, Ethiopia, and Senegal. These activities provided governments with practical tools, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and regionally tailored support to build integrated geospatial systems and expand the availability of high-quality data. The project was co-implemented with UNDESA in collaboration with the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). Its scheduled duration was from December 2018 to November 2019.
