On March 13, 2011, a 15-member Chinese rescue team left Beijing for Japan to provide disaster relief support following the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. This medical team also brought a $167,000 USD donation from China to assist in relief efforts. The team joined relief work in Ofunato, Iwate, a coastal city of Japan severely hit by the earthquake and tsunami. Team leader Yin Guanghui reported that the team brought life exploration devices and other equipment to help with rescue efforts. Record ID#49994 captures the donation. Record ID#110801 captures the rescue team. The Tōhoku earthquake took place on March 11, 2011 about 72 km (45 mi) east of the Oshika Peninsula of the Tōhoku region in Japan. It lasted approximately six minutes, causing a tsunami. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan, and the fourth most powerful earthquake recorded in the world since modern seismography began in 1900. This earthquake prompted assistance from various countries, including China. This donation is one of several from China to Japan following the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
