Project narrative
On November 1, 2002, the Chinese Government and the Government of Ghana signed an exchanges of letters for the National Theatre Rehabilitation Project. The Chinese Government reportedly committed RMB 20 million in grant funding for the National Theatre Rehabilitation Project. This project involved the rehabilitation of the 15,000 square meter National Theatre of Ghana. More specifically, it involved the installation of a new floor, the supply of new fireproof stage curtains, the installation of new auditorium seats, the installation of a new fire fighting system, and the construction of a ramp entrance to the theater. China National Complete Plant Import Export Corporation (COMPLANT) was the contractor responsible for implementation and it was supported by local technicians. The theater was closed on November 30, 2004 to allow for the rehabilitation work. Then, on March 22, 2005, a groundbreaking ceremony took place. Although the project was expected to take 11 months, it was not completed and handed over to authorities until March 30, 2007. The National Theater of Ghana was originally built in the early 1990s with one or more interest-free loans from the Chinese Government.
