Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In November 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao pledged to construct 100 bedroom hospital in Liberia at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. On December 24, 2008, the PRC signed a US$10 million contract with the Government of Liberia for the construction of the 100 bedroom Tappita F Jackson Doe Regional Referral Hospital in Nimba County. Construction began on March 25, 2009 and was completed on July 23, 2010. However, the hospital did not officially open until February 12, 2011 due to the inadequacy of medical workers in Liberia. China Henan International Cooperation Group Co. (CHICO) implemented the construction. The hospital is 23,000 square meters and will include outpatient building, medical technology building, inpatient building, comprehensive building and corridor, and other auxiliary buildings. The US$10 million contract was financed through a Chinese grant; however, the date and financial details of this grant are unknown. Additional funding was provided through an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement in 2013 (#30738). The Jackson Doe hospital may be one of the 30 hospitals listed in Record ID #1646.
