Description
At the 2006 Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the Chinese Government and the Government of Ghana signed an MoU on the construction of rural primary schools. China’s Ministry of Commerce reportedly committed $2.2 million of grant funding for the construction of three primary schools: one in the Assin South Constituency within the Central Region, one within the Mophor Constituency within the Western Region, and one within the Odorgonno suburb within the Greater Accra Region. Each school consists of a classroom block, a kindergarten block, common rooms for staff, an entrance porch with a security post, an overhead water storage facility, a sick room, a library, a bath area, a toilet facility, a kitchen, washrooms, a head teacher's office, and a play area. Qingdao Construction Group was the contractor responsible for project implementation. On June 7, 2008, an official groundbreaking ceremony took place. However, construction of the schools in the Assin South Constituency and the Mophor Constituency did not begin until June 19, 2008 and July 20, 2008 and ended in April 2, 2009 and April 3, 2009. It is unknown when construction of the school in the Odorgonno suburb of Accra began, but it was officially completed and handed over to the Ghanaian authorities on May 20, 2009.
