Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On December 24, 2009, the Chinese Government signed an exchange of letters with the Government of Eritrea providing a $5 million grant for the Orotta Referral Hospital Renovation and Expansion Project. Then, on December 28, 2010, the Eritrean Ministry of Health and Tianjin International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group Corporation signed an agreement related to the implementation of this project. The agreement was signed by Amna Nurhusein and Li Liliansheng, the Chinese Ambassador to Eritrea. This project involved the renovation and expansion of the Orotta Referral Hospital in Asmara, which is also known as Mekane Hiwot Hospital or مستشفى ميكان هيوت. More specifically, it involved the construction of a cardiac and neurology center, the construction of a physiotherapy and oxygen production facility, the construction of an underground pond with the capacity of 500 cubic meters of water, and the repair of water pipelines and other facilities. Tianjin International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group Corporation was the contractor responsible for implementation. This project commenced on December 28, 2010 and it was completed on October 14, 2014. The Chinese Government also provided an RMB 80 million interest-free loan for the original construction of this hospital (captured in Record ID#493).
