Project narrative

On September 14, 2013, China expressed interest in setting up a Chinese Cultural Center in Addis Ababa to further strengthen the strengthen cultural relations between the two countries. Ethiopian state Minister of culture, Mulugeta Seid lauded China's use of culture for economic purpose including job creation. Ethiopia said it would support the construction of the center. The two countries signed a number of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding on education, culture, and development cooperation. On November 25, 2013, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Jie Xiaoyan, and Ethiopian Minister of Culture and Tourism, Muferiat Kamil, jointly signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on the Establishment of a Chinese Cultural Center in Ethiopia in Addis Ababa. According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese Cultural Center was going to be established "soon" as of December 2014. As of 2017, it is reported that the construction of the Chinese Cultural Center is still in the negotiation stage.
