Project narrative

On December 11, 2007 an agreement was signed for the establishment of a Confucius Institute at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. This project was funded by Hanban, an organization funded by the Chinese government that partners Chinese educational institutions with those around the world to establish Confucius Institutes. The cooperating Chinese university for this project was Jinan University. The Confucius Institute at Rhodes University began operating August 20, 2008. The classes offered include Chinese studies and Chinese language courses and cultural activities are held at the institute.
