Description

For years there has been discussion of building a bridge over the Corentyne River between Suriname and Guyana. In 2014, China stated that they were interested in financing and building the project. Media statements have said that plans are being drawn up, and a Chinese company has been selected for the construction contract, though a specific company was not named. In 2013, China announced that it was creating a 3 billion USD Caricom fund for those Caribbean countries who ascribed to the One-China policy. The fund was intended for infrastructure projects, and many associated with the bridge project say that it will be partially paid for through this fund. All talk of the bridge project is still speculative, and a final amount for the completion of the project is unknown.
