Description

On October 29, 2007, the Chinese Government announced that it would provide $20 million of grant funding to address the damage wrought by recent heavy rains (as captured via Project ID#35529) and $28 million of grant funding to support housing for the poor, the revamping of the National Stadium, and the construction of a new road to Ciudad Quesada (as captured via Project ID#37213). On January 11th, 2008, China agreed to fund the National Stadium project in its entirety, which ended up costing $105M, as opposed to the originally estimated $25M of the $28M promise made the year prior (as captured via Project ID#37266). Construction of the aforementioned road to Ciudad Quesada—the San Carlos highway project—was delayed, due in part to the Chinese funding promised for its construction being directed towards the National Stadium project, instead. As of 2023, the Costa Rican government is seeking a $250M loan from the Inter-American Development Bank to complete the San Carlos highway and other highway infrastructure projects in the country.
