Project narrative

In June 2008, the project of building a Chinatown in San Jose, Costa Rica was announced at an official ceremony that included Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, Municipalidad de San José mayor, Johnny Araya and the mayor of Beijing, Guo Jinlong. The project was funded by the Costa Rican government, the city of San José, and a US$1.5 million grant from the People's Republic of China. The Chinatown officially opened on 5 December 2012, with a 550-meter pedestrian boulevard and a Tang Dynasty-style archway.
