In 2001, the Fijian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received $120,000 on a gratis basis from the People's Republic of China's embassy to Fiji to assist the Ministry of Fijian Affairs. Kaliopate Tavola, the foreign affairs minister, signed the agreement for the grant with the ambassador for China, Zhang Junsai, at Suvavou House in Suva. The money donated was to assist Fijian Affairs for the extension of the Nadave Training Centre, equipment purchasing for the Native Lands Commission, office equipment purchases for the Institute of Fijian languages and culture and preparation for building office complex of the Great Council of Chiefs.
