Project narrative

In 2013, the Chinese Government and the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu signed an agreement, which dispatched Chinese technicians to carry out a feasibility study for the Malapoa College Renovation and Extension Project. Then, on January 29, 2014, the Chinese Government and the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu signed letters of exchange, which committed approximately RMB 104 million of grant funding for the Malapoa College Renovation and Extension Project. The purpose of the project was to renovate and expand Malapoa College near Port Vila on the island of Efate (exact locational coordinates: -17.723282, 168.304442). The project involved the construction of a two-story teacher’s apartment, a canteen, a multi-purpose storm proof playground, an equipment room, 24 classrooms, two laboratory buildings with eight science labs, a staff room, a library, a student lounge, a three-story dormitory for boys, and a three-story dormitory for girls. Yanjian Group signed a construction contract on December 16, 2015. Then, a foundation-laying ceremony took place on August 1, 2016. In September 2017, the Prime Minister of Vanuatu and the Chinese Ambassador returned to inspect the progress of the project. On April 15, 2018, the donor (China’s Ministry of Commerce) dispatched 4 experts to conduct an on-site inspection. The project was officially completed on September 13, 2018.
