Description

On August 22, 2014, China's People's Liberation Army Navy hospital ship, Peace Ark (和平方舟), arrived at the Fijian capital, Suva, to begin its week-long medical assistance mission. The assistance is part of China's "Mission Harmony- 2014" or "和谐使命—2014." The ship had 100 medical staff, including 22 specialists, who provided free medical services such as diagnosis and treatment of common and frequently-occurring diseases to the people of Fiji for one week. The ship has 300 beds, 8 operating rooms, and over 200 types of medical devices. Brig. Gen. Mohammed Aziz, chief-of-staff of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, received Peace Ark at the King's Wharf, welcoming the Chinese hospital ship on behalf of Fijian President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, and the military. Shen Hao, deputy commander of the East China Sea Fleet of the Chinese Navy and commander of "Mission Harmony-2014," briefed Aziz on the Chinese hospital ship and the medical assistance mission, saying that he believes the friendly visit will realize the genuine wish and goal of deepening understanding, promoting friendship, and boosting development.
