Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On July 23rd, 2014, the Chinese government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of Health. Through this agreement China will send teams of doctors with varying specialties to operate in the San Fernando General Hospital and teach medical professionals in Trinidad and Tobago for the next two years, with a new medical team arriving every six months. The Ministry of Health of Trinidad and Tobago will oversee the teams, as they provide specialty medical services to the people of Trinidad and Tobago as well as instruct medical students and professionals in the country. According to the Trinidadian government article, the agreement was signed in March 2014, not July 23, 2014. The four medical teams were provided by Xuanwu, Tian Tan, Chaoyang, and Shijitan hospitals. According to Newsday, the first medical team arrived on August 7, 2014 from Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing. On April 18th, 2015, the second medical team performed free medical consultations for representatives of Chinese funded enterprises and various Trinidadian patients. On May 8th, 2015, the medical team held a photo op at the Chinese Embassy. On July 10th, 2015, the second medical team and the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Health hosted a Neuroscience Conference that reportedly attracted over 200 doctors. According to the ministry of Commerce, the fourth and final team arrived on December 28th 2015, held a free clinic on March 20th, 2016, joined a meeting with embassy officials on April 18th, and took part in the China-Trinidad-Caribbean Neuroendoscopy Seminar and Training Class on June 13 According to a 2017 Chinese embassy article, the fourth and final medical team from this agreement departed from Trinidad and Tobago in summer 2016. This project is linked to Record ID#39686, where the first team requested better facilities
