Project narrative

On April 25, 2006, as a part of a series of ceremonies and memorials to remember the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Ukrainian Economy Minister Arseniy Yatsenyukniy and Chinese Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Ukraine Gao Yuishen signed an intergovernmental agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, the Chinese Government agreed to provide an RMB 10 million grant (1.2 million USD) to address the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. More specifically, the proceeds of the grant were to be used for the technical reconstruction of the sarcophagus over the deteriorated reactor and to assist the victims of the Chernobyl disaster by providing medical equipment and constructing a medical rehabilitation center.
