12 February 2009, the Government of the People’s Republic of China and The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona signed an agreement to establish a Confucius Institute at Mona. The Confucius Institute at UWI Mona is a partnership between UWI and Taiyuan University of Technology, and is sponsored by the National Office of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Hanban). 13 February 2009, the Vice President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, visited the Mona Campus and presented the Principal with a plaque for the Institute. The Confucius Institute was officially opened on 19 July 2010. The primary objective of the Confucius Institute is to promote the learning of Chinese Language (Mandarin) and Culture among Jamaicans. The Confucius Institute is located on UWI’s campus at 6 Gibraltar Road, adjacent to the Founder’s Park.
