On September 16, 2014, in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, signed an agreement on the joint establishment of the Confucius Institute at University of Colombo with Dr. W. Project narrative

On September 16, 2014, in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, signed an agreement on the joint establishment of the Confucius Institute at University of Colombo with Dr. W. K. Hirimburegama, Vice-Chancellor of the University. On December 30, 2016, the construction completed. The institute officially started operations in May 2017.
