Project narrative
In 2007, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Waseda University signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at Waseda University. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide teaching materials, an annual fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. In 2007, Waseda University and Peking University, the cooperating partner, signed a supplementary implementation agreement. Peking University agreed to provide one or two visiting scholars annually, donate teaching materials, and receive student study groups. The Confucius Institute began operations on November 12, 2011.
Staff comments
1. There was a dedicated website for the Confucius Institute at https://waseda-wci.jp/. 2. The precise commitment date of this Confucius Institute is unknown. Thus, for the time being, AidData has coded the commitment_year field as 2007 and marked the committment_year_estimated? field as True. This issue merits further investigation. 3. The Chinese name of this project is 早稻田大学孔子学院.
