Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2007, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis. As part of the agreement, Hanban was obligated to provide teaching materials, an annual fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds would be dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement had a 5-year validity and would automatically renew at the end of every 5-year term. Sun Yat-sen University was the Chinese cooperating partner of the university. The Confucius Institute began operations on August 2, 2007, with a formal opening ceremony in 2008, In 2019, the Confucius Institute was shut down, a decision praised by Indiana Congressman Jim Banks (whom accused Confucius Institutes as being fronts for espionage).
