In May 2010, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Brock University signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at Brock University. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide teaching materials, an annual fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. Hanban approved the set up of the Confucius Institute on June 12, 2010. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. In May 2010, Brock University and Minjiang University, the cooperating partner, signed a supplementary implementation agreement. Minjiang University agreed to provide one or two visiting scholars annually, donate teaching materials, and receive student study groups. As of 2010, it was one the three Confucius Institutes that was established in Ontario. Th Confucius Institute obtained $150,000 USD support in start-up funds along with up to $100,000 USD in annual project-based funding to support initiatives offered by the institute.
