Project narrative

On July 30, 2007, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the Department of Education in New Brunswick signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute in New Brunswick. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide teaching materials, an annual fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. On July 30, 2007, the Department of Education in New Brunswick and Shandong Provincial Education Department, the cooperating partner, signed a supplementary implementation agreement. Shandong Provincial Education Department agreed to provide one or two visiting scholars annually, donate teaching materials, and receive student study groups. The Confucius Institute in New Brunswick began operations on July 15, 2007; its official establishment was held on May 26, 2008. In August 2019, a decision on not renewing the five-year contract was made and the language classes were expected to end in 2022.
