Project narrative

The Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and School District No. 43 (SD43, Coquitlam) signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute in Coquitlam in the October and November 2011 period. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide teaching materials, an annual fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. In 2011, SD43 and South China Normal University, the cooperating partner, signed a supplementary implementation agreement. South China Normal University agreed to provide one or two visiting scholars annually, donate teaching materials, and receive student study groups. Hanban approved the upgrade of the Confucius Classroom in Coquitlam to a Confucius Institute in December 2011. The total revenue was CAD 572,219.89 of which CAD 353,219.89 was from grants in 2020. The Confucius Institute was officially established on February 12, 2012. SD43 began as a Confucius Classroom in 2008. The Confucius Institute in Coquitlam oversaw the following Confucius Classrooms: - ID#93763: Confucius Classroom at Walton Elementary - ID#93764: Confucius Classroom at Mulgrave School
