Project narrative

On August 3, 2012, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the University of Szeged signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide funding to support the institute. On June 25, 2012, the University of Szeged and Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) -- the cooperating partner -- signed an additional implementation agreement. SISU agreed to provide at least two visiting scholars/instructors, donate textbooks and teaching materials, and receive student study groups. The Confucius Institute was officially established on October 10, 2012 as marked by an official opening ceremony. Since it was founded, SZTE Confucius Institute has achieved various goals with the joint effort of both SISU and SZTE. It has established 21 teaching points, many of which include teaching Chinese as the second language. Increasing numbers of Hungarians have passed the HSK examination, a test of Chinese as a foreign language, and have subsequently gone to China for further study. The Institute has also held hundreds of cultural activities, with altogether millions of people taking part in. The Confucius Institute of University of Szeged (SZTE) held a ceremony to celebrate its fifth anniversary on October 18, 2017. On September 27, 2019, the Confucius Classroom at Eötvös József High School and Primary Schools was opened under the Confucius Institute at the University of Szeged. This project is tracked separately under ID#90986.
