Project narrative

On September 19th, 2015, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Oxford Brookes University signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at Oxford Brookes University. Under the agreement, the institute is funded by grant by Hanban. The institute was established in cooperation with the China Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press at Beijing Foreign Studies University. On October 24th, 2015, the institute was officially established through an unveiling ceremony. The institute first opened its doors in April 2016. The institute is the first Confucius Institute to be co-established by a university and a publishing company. The institute primarily focuses on Chinese language and culture education in publishing. Since 2016, the institute has worked with 1,500 learners and put on events for over 11,000 attendees. The institute also has established relationships with local primary and secondary schools, including Didcot Girls’ School and Oxford High School.
