Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On August 25, 2015, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Coventry University signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at Coventry University. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide volumes of teaching materials, a $150,000 USD start-up fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. On November 2, 2015, a supplemental implementation agreement was signed with the Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics -- the partnering Chinese university. Under the agreement, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics agreed to provide some degree of financing to assist with the institute, teaching materials, visiting scholars, and assistance for visiting student groups from the institute. On May 12, 2016, the institute officially opened through an unveiling ceremony, becoming the first Confucius Institute to open in the West Midlands. As of 2020, the institute has taught a total of 44 courses and 52 teaching classes, reaching 223 students. It has also launched 19 "Chinese Corner" online activities and 36 "Chinese Clubs" at local schools.
