Project narrative

On May 22, 2015, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the Queen Mary University of London signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at Queen Mary University of London. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide 3,000 volumes of teaching materials, a $150,000 USD start-up fund and varying annual funding, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. A Feasibility Analysis had been conducted earlier on September 2nd, 2014 to analyze the feasibility of the institute. On November 3rd, 2015, a supplemental implementation agreement was signed with the Shanghai University Of Finance And Economics -- the partnering Chinese university. Under the agreement, Shanghai University Of Finance And Economics agreed to provide some degree of financing, teaching materials, one or two visiting instructors annually, and assistance to visiting student groups. On October 23rd, 2015, the institute officially opened, becoming the second Confucius Institute created by Shanghai University Of Finance And Economics. As of 2019, the institute has created one Confucius Classroom and has taught over 130 students in the university.
