Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On March 29, 2011 and April 7, 2011, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and University of Glasgow, respectively, signed a cooperation agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow. Under the agreement, Hanban agreed to provide a $150,000 USD grant for a start-up fund, followed by a certain amount of annual funding depending on the operational demands of the institute. Hanban also agreed to provide Chinese instructors and 3,000 volumes of Chinese books, teaching materials, and audio-visual materials. The University of Glasgow agreed, among other things, to provide a free fixed office space and site for working and teaching facilities and open a special account for the Confucius Institute at the local Bank of China or other Hanban-approved headquarters. In July 2011, a supplementary implementation agreement was signed between University of Glasgow and Nankai University, the cooperating institution. Nankai agreed to give learning materials, provide one or two visiting scholars each year, and receive Confucius Institute students. On October 4, 2011, the institute was officially opened at a ceremony led by First Minister Alex Salmond MSP. In December 2016, the institute received Confucius Institute of the Year. Over the years it has hosted the 2016 UK & Ireland Confucius Institute Conference and provided various scholarships to students from Glasgow to study in China. On April 9, 2018, representatives of the University of Glasgow and Hanban signed a Memorandum of Understanding to secure further funding to improve the facilities of the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow (Record ID#91753).
