Project narrative

On April 2, 2007, Zhao Guocheng, the Deputy Director of the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), and David Grant, President of Cardiff University, signed an agreement between Hanban and Cardiff University to agree to establish the Cardiff Confucius Institute. In the agreement, Hanban agreed to provide a $50,000 USD to $100,000 USD grant as a start-up fund, payable to the special account opened by Cardiff University in the local Bank of China. Hanban also agreed to provide multimedia coursewares, 3,000 books and multimedia materials, and one or two Chinese instructors. An additional implementation agreement was signed between Cardiff University and Xiamen University, the cooperating university, on a later date. Under the agreement, Xiamen University agreed to provide some financial support for the institute, select teachers and tutors from Xiamen University to held the institute, and host students. Both agreements must be renewed every five years. The cooperation agreement was renewed on February 4, 2012 and the implementation agreement was renewed on October 21, 2018. On February 4, 2008, an inauguration ceremony for the Cardiff Confucius Institute was held to mark the opening of the institute. The institute is the second Confucius Institute in Wales. The institute focuses on language teaching, provides countless scholarship opportunities, and has created 7 Confucius classrooms around Wales.
