Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On July 15, 2005, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Manchester, to agree to establish the Confucius Institute at the University of Manchester. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide volumes of teaching materials, an annual fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through an account created by the institute within the University of Manchester's finance system. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. On October 18, 2006, the institute was officially opened, co-funded by the University of Manchester and Beijing Normal University. The institute was the second Confucius Institute in the UK. The institute provides Chinese language teaching and testing, cultural and education exchanges, and teacher training programs. It also hosts a variety of classes and programs for local primary and secondary schools, including 4 Confucius classrooms established at St. Paul's CE Primary School, The Gleddings Preparatory School, Bolton School Boys' Division Junior School, and All Hallows Catholic College. On September 21, 2016, the institute held an unveiling ceremony for its new refurbished four-story headquarters at 180 Waterloo Place. The new building was funded by Hanban as part of the institute's designation as a Model Confucius Institute. The Confucius Institute at the University of Manchester is the fourth institute in the UK to receive this status. This project is separately tracked under Record ID#90046. The Confucius Institute at the University of Manchester oversaw the following 4 Confucius Classrooms: - ID#90460: St Paul's CE Primary School - ID#90469: All Hallows Catholic College - ID#90483: Gleddings Preparatory School - ID#90498: Bolton School Junior Boys
