Project narrative

On May 24th, 2007, London South Bank University (LBSU) and the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) signed a cooperation agreement to establish the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine in London. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide 3,000 volumes of teaching materials, a GBP 100,000 start-up fund, and one or two Chinese instructors annually. London South Bank University agreed to raise a start-up fund of USD 2.6 million. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. The cooperating universities were Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine and Harbin Normal University. LBSU and these two universities signed a supplementary agreement to settle matters unsettled in the original agreement on an unspecified later date. On February 25th, 2008, the institute was officially established, creating the first Traditional Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute in the world. The institute runs a Chinese Medicine Clinic, which provides professional acupuncture treatment, along with other treatments. The institute also has received the Confucius Institute of the Year Award (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). As of 2016, the institute has a total of 65 teaching sites in primary and secondary schools, including 15 Confucius classrooms and 50 partner schools, with a total of 50,000 registered students. On February 27th 2014, Hanban provided an additional GBP 800,000 grant awarding the institute with a "Model Confucius Institute" status and expanding the institute to Caxton House at 13-16 Borough Road. An inauguration ceremony opening the Model institute was held on September 20th, 2015. This project is tracked under ID#90039.
