Project narrative
On March 23, 2011, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Lancaster University signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at Lancaster University. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide 3,000 volumes of teaching materials, a necessary start-up fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. The cooperating university is South China University of Technology. On December 20, 2011, the Confucius Institute at Lancaster University was unveiled at a ceremony attended by Minister Counselor Tian Xiaogang of the Education Office of the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom, Consul General Pan Yundong of the Chinese Consulate General in Manchester, and Acting President of Lancaster University McCain. On December 21, 2016, Hanban provided a grant to refurbish the institute to expand it to both floors of the Roundhouse, the institute's home at Lancaster University. The project finished on September 12, 2018 and is tracked under Record ID#90034. On December 10, 2019, the institute was give the award of Confucius Institute of the Year. Currently, the institute also has 2 Confucius Classrooms and one culture and language education site at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
