Project narrative

On December 28, 2011, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Goldsmiths, University of London signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance at Goldsmiths, University of London. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide 3,000 volumes of teaching materials, a $150,000 USD start-up fund, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. On February 17, 2012, Goldsmiths, University of London and Beijing Dance Academy, the cooperating university, signed the "Execution Agreement on Cooperative Construction of the Goldsmiths Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance" to formally start the construction process of the institute. On June 9, 2012, the Goldsmiths Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance was officially inaugurated with an unveiling ceremony. An additional implementation agreement between Goldsmiths and Beijing Dance Academy was signed on December 8, 2018. Under the agreement, Beijing Dane Academy agreed to provide teaching materials, funds three or four visiting scholars/instructors annually, and receive Confucius Institute students. The Goldsmiths Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance is the first and only Dance and Performance focused Confucius Institute. As of 2018, the institute has 4,700 non-registered students and 617 registered students, a Confucius classroom at St Catherine's College, 6 teaching sites, and around 10 cultural activities every year. In 2020, the Beijing Dance Academy donated health and epidemic prevention materials such as masks, goggles, thermometers, and pharmaceuticals.
