Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On October 18, 2006, the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust of England (SSAT) and Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) signed an agreement to establish a Confucius Institute to promote the teaching of Chinese language and culture in primary and secondary schools in England. The institute was formally opened in July 2007 with 5 SSAT Confucius Classrooms. This project is separately tracked in ID#89914. On June 8, 2012, the Institute of Education at the University College London signed an agreement with the Confucius Institute Headquarters of China to assume control of the SSAT Confucius Institute as the SSAT's contract with the UK government ended in 2011. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide teaching materials, courseware, books, to authorize the use of online courses, to provide a set amount of annual funds according to needs, and to send Chinese instructors and pay for their air fares and salaries. The funds are dispersed through a local Bank of China account or other approved bank account created by the institute. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. It automatically extended for 5 more years on June 8, 2017. The cooperating institution is Peking University and the Affiliated Peking University High School. On June 22, 2017, the Model Confucius Institute was completed and opened at the UCL School of Education, providing brand-new teacher training and research facilities and equipment. The Model institute is separately funded by Hanan and is tracked in Record ID#90013. Currently, there are more than 9,000 students studying Chinese in the 45 UCL-IOE Confucius Classrooms.
