The University of Botswana (UB) signed an agreement with the Headquarters of Confucius Institute to establish the Confucius Institute at UB in October 2007. The Confucius Institute was established jointly by the University of Botswana and Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) through the signed of a Memorandum of Agreement on May 15, 2008. The Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana began its operations on May 30, 2009, and the first session of Chinese language began on July 6, 2009. Then, on September 10, 2009, the formal launching of Chinese classes was held. The Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana was set up in cooperation with Shanghai Normal University to act as a platform for Chinese language, history and culture learning and public events related to China in the local society. 230 Botswana students have taken classes at the institute as of January 2010. As of December 2011, it has trained more than 1300 students learning Chinese.
