Description

In September 2014, the Chinese Government and the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu signed letters of exchange, which committed $7.28 million of grant funding for the Korman Stadium Complex Construction Project. The purpose of the project was to construct a new Korman Stadium Complex in Port Vila in order to help Vanuatu host the 2017 Pacific Mini Games (PMG). The project involved the demolition of the existing complex and the construction of a 3137.87 square meter stadium (gymnasium) with seating capacity for 1,000 people, the construction and renovation of 10 grandstands with seating capacity for 3000 people, the renovation of an archery range, the construction of a rubber sports track and drainage system, the construction of two swimming pools, four beach volleyball courts, four tennis courts, one basketball court, and two athlete preparation rooms and locker rooms. China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) was the contractor responsible for implementation. A project implementation agreement was signed on April 21, 2016 and the originally anticipated period of project implementation was June 2016 to September 2017. Construction began in June 2016 and was delayed by Cyclone Pam in March 2017, but the sports complex was completed and officially handed over to the local authorities on October 30, 2017. Over 6000 people attended the handover ceremony and Vanuatu’s Minister of Youth Development and Sports reported that he was ‘very proud to have this sporting facility.' More than 2,000 players from 24 countries and regions attended the 2017 Pacific Mini Games at the Korman Stadium Complex in December 2017.
