Description

On June 17, 2011, the Chinese Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) donated 5000 books to 10 universities and 20 middle and elementary schools in North Korea, including Kim Il-sung University. The purpose of this grant was to allow Korean youth to improve their Chinese, while also learning about Chinese culture and Chinese "efforts to build a harmonious, democratic, prosperous and strong socialist country," according to a press release from the Chinese Embassy in North Korea. The Chinese books donated by Hanban were divided into five categories, including Chinese teaching books, reference books, ancient Chinese mythological story books, and business books. The Chinese Ambassador to North Korea Hongcai Liu presented the Chinese books to Tian Kewan, Vice Chairman of the North Korean Education Commission.
