Description

On February 1, 2016, China pledged to donate 60 million RMB (US $9.23 million or MK6.8 billion) to Malawi following President Prof. Peter Mutharika's recent appeal for humanitarian support in the wake of food shortage in the country. Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi was the one to announce the donation. Mutharika said the support will cover poor and vulnerable communities located in the country’s 15 disaster-prone districts. According to China MOFCOM in Malawi, letters were exchanged for this donation on May 18, 2016. On August 4, 2016, a handover ceremony for the 6,585 tons of rice provided to Malawi was held at the country's presidential palace.
