Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In June 2004, Chinese and Hungarian Ministries of Education signed an agreement to open a bilingual school in Budapest, teaching both Chinese and Hungarian. In September 2004, the school officially opened its doors. The Chinese Government annually donates textbooks, computers, Chinese flags, and traditional lanterns and is also paying the salary of one of the Chinese teachers each year. The Hungarian government is funding most of the upkeep, and Budapest city authorities are providing the building -- which formerly housed a trade school -- without charge for 50 years. The school is the only public school in Hungary and even the Central and Eastern European region, offering a 12-year education taught in both Hungarian and Mandarin. In June 2011, the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School received a grant from Hanban and became a Confucius Classroom (see linked Record ID#91027).
