Description
On December 1, 2016, the Chinese Government donated more than 10,000 tons of rice to the Government of Mozambique to support victims in drought-stricken areas of the country. 3,500 tons were mainly distributed to Gaza and Inhambane provinces. Another 6,500 tons were shipped to the port of Beira and distributed in Sofala, Manica, Zambezi and Tete provinces. The rice donation was worth about $10 million and was distributed to approximately 700,000 affected people by the Government of Mozambique’s National Disaster Management Authority. In April 2016, Mozambique issued a red alert due to food and water shortages following lower than average crop yields following a strong El Nino phenomenon the past two years. At the donation ceremony in Maputo, China’s Ambassador to Mozambique Su Jian said 'The Chinese government has been following closely the evolution of the droughts and floods including its impact in Mozambique and the support aims to help the country overcome these challenges.' These 10,000 tons of rice were funded through a larger 1 billion RMB grant commitment that is captured in Project ID#52624.
