Description
In October 2017, the Chinese Government and the Government of Mozambique signed a grant agreement for the Xai-Xai Airport Construction Project. The agreement was signed by the Government of Mozambique's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Nyeleti Mondlane and Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique Su Jian. In total, the Chinese Government has reportedly committed RMB 447 million of grant funding. The project involves the the construction of a new airport in Xai-Xai, the capital of the Gaza province (Xai-Xai机场兴建). More specifically, it involves the construction of a runway, terminals, aprons, navigation lights, connecting roads, parking lots, and auxiliary facilities. The ultimate objective of this project is to facilitate the movement of people and goods, thereby promoting the development of the local economy in Gaza Province (especially tourism). Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) is responsible for project implementation. A foundation-laying ceremony took place on October 5, 2018. On November 29, 2021, an inauguration ceremony was held at the airport to celebrate its completion.
