According to email correspondence between AidData’s Executive Director and the Director General of the Office of the Secretary of State for Planning and Regional Integration in Guinea-Bissau, the Chinese Government provided a grant worth $2,250,000 to the Government of Guinea-Bissau for the Solar-Powered Streetlight Project. China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) was the funding source. This project, which was implemented in two phases, involved the installation of 110 solar-powered lighting along two main roads in the city of Bissau measuring 3850 meters in length. In February 2013, the Chinese Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau, Li Baojun, visited the project site. Then, on April 23, 2013, the Chinese Government donated 110 solar-powered street lights. The project was completed and officially handed over to the Government of Guinea-Bissau on November 8, 2016. Staff Note: The Portuguese project title is Projecto reabilitacao do sector energetico.
