Description
In 2016, China’s Ministry of Commerce provided an RMB 20.31 million grant to the Government of Sudan for the Second Abu Ushar Friendship Hospital Reconstruction and Expansion Project. The purpose of this grant was to cover 100% of the commercial contract with China Geo-Engineering Corporation. The Abu Ushar Friendship Hospital (苏中阿布欧舍友谊医院) covers an area of 4.05 hectares, has 143 beds, and has a daily outpatient capacity of about 200 people. It is located in the town of Abu Ushar (or Abu `Ushar, أبو عشر) within Gezira State, 110 km southeast of Khartoum. China Geo-Engineering Corporation was the contractor responsible for implementation. The groundbreaking ceremony was on 7 November 2016 and works ended on 31 August 2017. Then, on 12 November 2017, a formal project handover ceremony took place. The hospital was originally a horse farm built during the British colonial period in 1929. In 1974, Abu Ushar Friendship Hospital became the headquarters for the Chinese medical mission. The hospital receives 5,000 cases monthly. China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) carried out a maternal and infant healthcare network project at this facility (see Project ID#30435). China also financed the first renovation to the hospital in 2010 (see Project ID#53415).
