Description

On November 15, 2014, the Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan Ma Qiang signed an agreement to implement a feasibility study for the expansion of the Juba Teaching Hospital. This study was completed on January 6, 2015. On October 21, 2015, Ambassador Ma and South Sudan's Foreign Minister signed a $33 million grant agreement for Juba Teaching Hospital Renovation and Expansion Project. The contractor responsible for project implementation was China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG). Construction on the project started on September 30, 2017. The project was completed on November 13, 2019. Juba Teaching Hospital is the only national referral hospital in the whole country of South Sudan and it is located in Juba City, Central Equatoria State. With an estimated population of 9.86 million based on annual population growth of 3% from a population census conducted in 2008 and lack of proper functioning primary health care facilities upcountry, many South Sudanese have nowhere to go but to this national referral hospital. The Chinese Government-financed renovations of the hospital included an emergency department building, department of gynecology and obstetrics building, and a dormitory for Chinese medical teams. The project also included the provision of medical equipment such as CT machines and EEG machines as well as one year of technical cooperation following the completion of construction.
