Full Description

Project narrative

On July 19th, 2016, Sun Weidong, the Chinese ambassador to Pakistan, signed an agreement with the Pakistani Prime Minister’s National Historical and Cultural Heritage Consultant to support the installation of a new chandelier for the Mazar-e-Quaid, the Mausoleum of Founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah, in Karachi, Pakistan to replace the one given by the Chinese government 46 years ago. The original crystal chandelier was donated by the Chinese government Pakistan in 1970 and remains the only foreign gift within the Jinnah Memorial Hall. At the request of the Pakistani government, the Chinese government agreed to replace it with free aid. The new chandelier is a 3D-scanned replica of the original, but lighter and more energy efficient. On December 17, the Pakistani government held a grand ceremony in Karachi to unveil the chandelier. Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong said on the occasion that this year marks the 65th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties, and the installation of the chandelier is part of the commemoration.
