Project narrative

In December 2018, the Chinese Government and the Government of the Maldives signed a grant agreement for the China-Maldives Ophthalmology Centre Project. This project is also known as the Dr. N. D. Abdullah Abdul Hakeem Ophthalmology Centre Project. The China-Maldives Ophthalmology Centre is located at the Hulhumale' Hospital. It will provide eye care treatments related to cataracts, glaucoma, ocular surface diseases, refractive errors, and vitreous and retinal disease. The size of the grant that was provided for the centre is unknown, but it is known that the Chinese Government also donated equipment, medications and consumables to the centre worth over MVR 11.1 million. The project implementer is Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University (ZOC) in Guangdong. The project completion ceremony took place on January 13, 2020.
