Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2010, Chinese Ambassador to India, Zhang Yan, announced that China will donate 1 million USD to Nalanda University (Nalanda Mahavihara) in Rajgir, India. Yan made the announcement after meeting Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The donation aims to enhance cultural relations with India. In 2010, the Indian Parliament passed an act to establish the new Nalanda University in the image of the Nalanda University of ancient India. The funds will be used to build a Chinese-type library at the university. The project has been completed. It is unclear what branch of the Chinese government provided funding. The project is part of Sino-India culture communication initiative. As a part of the same cultural communication initiative, the government of India provided 4 million USD worth of technical, financial, and other support to build an Indian-style Buddhist Temple in Luoyang, Henan Province, China. The new temple sits adjacent to the 1st century White Horse Temple (Baima Si).
