Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

According to Haban, the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus was founded July 7, 2014. On October 9, 2014, representatives of the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) and UWI Cave Hill signed an implementation agreement for the establishment of the institute according to the CUPL website. It officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 22, 2015, though the teaching building was incomplete. The groundbreaking ceremony for the institute's teaching building took place on July 11, 2014, and it opened May 18, 2017. Its mission is to provide instruction on Chinese language and culture, facilitate cultural exchanges, and promote cooperation between China and Barbados. The institute, for example, hosts 3-hour Chinese language classes, typically consisting of about 13 students. It also provides classes to primary and secondary school students, including students from St. Stephen’s Primary School and Ellerslie Secondary School.
