Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On March 1, 2016, China signed a BBD$19 million grant contract with Barbados to help refurbish the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium (加菲尔德∙索伯斯体育馆) in Bridgetown. The project included solar power installation and general maintenance. Shanxi Construction Engineering Group implemented the project and was contracted on March 1, 2016. The design contract was signed on May 19, 2015 by the design inspection team and the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth. The groundbreaking ceremony occurred on March 21, 2016, and construction work primarily occurred from April 2016 to July 2017, with a fire on June 1, 2017, setting the schedule back. The completion and handover ceremony took place on August 28, 2017. The Garfield Sobers Gymnasium was initially built in 1992 using Chinese funds and refurbished in 2005, again with Chinese financial assistance.

Barbados is not ODA-eligible from 2011 onwards. The construction dates April 2016 to July 2017 were found in a photo in the MOFCOM source "我援巴巴多斯加菲尔德·索伯斯体育馆维修改造项目举行竣工移交仪式."
