Description
On August 27, 2015, tropical storm Erika hit Dominica and severely damaged its infrastructure. On July 14, 2016, the Governments of the People's Republic of China and Dominica signed and exchanged letters that will govern the building of new bridges and culverts, repair of broken road edges and resurfacing works along the E. O. LeBlanc Highway in order to help Dominica's post-Erika reconstruction. A grant worth RMB$126 million (approximately US$18.9 million or EC$50.1 million; see "The National Budget of the Commonwealth of Dominica Fiscal Year 2020-2021") was provided for the West Coast Road Rehabilitation Project as a gift to the Government and people of Dominica from the Government of People's Republic of China. Work was done by the Qingjian Group and included replacement of bridges, repairs to damaged sections of the road surface, rehabilitation of culvert crossings and drainage infrastructure and some slope stabilization. Replacement of traffic signs, road markings and reflective road studs will also be included. The grand-breaking ceremony of the Rehabilitation Project was held on Friday, August 18, 2017, at Macoucherie Estate. The handover and commissioning ceremony was held on July 13, 2020.
